I was in church listening to my pastor talk about Heaven from the book of Revelation, chapters 21 and 22, and it got me to thinking… What will Heaven be like for geeks?
Being a “geek” is such a large part of my personality — who I am — that I believe God has planted the seeds of that in my life. I am not what I am ultimately intended to be, but I do believe I must be a shadow of that. If I am right, then Heaven is for geeks, too. We won’t have our “geekness” removed from our souls like a bad appendix. We will express ourselves perfectly through the reality of who we are in God.
But what will that look like?
Mind you, this is all totally supposition. Aside from any direct quotes from the Bible I might give here, I speak with no authority. This is just my geek imagination working.
The implications of “death shall be no more…”
“And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, ‘Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God. He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.’ And he who was seated on the throne said, ‘Behold, I am making all things new.'”
If you believe in the truth of that passage from the Bible, geeks in heaven will get at least one “super-power”: Eternal life. And it changes everything.
What would you do with unlimited time on your hands, no fear of death, and no weariness, weakness, or pain?
Here’s one idea. Geeks love to learn, right? We are information sponges when it comes to the things that interest us. Well, there’s a whole big amazing universe out there that’s completely unexplored by Man, and I believe that God wants us to experience it with him. (Every artist likes an appreciative audience.)
With our current mortal limitations, there is no way that you, personally, will ever visit a planet in another solar system. Space travel is fraught with danger and constrained by the physical laws of this cosmos. No amount of technology will ever overcome that reality.
But if you have unlimited time, death is no more, entropy is defeated, and you’re in no particular hurry to get there? Lots of possibilities open up.
Think you already know all you need to know? Think again. All things will be made new, remember. So there will be lots of new stuff to see, new places to go, new stuff to build or make, and new stuff to learn about the limitless wisdom and power of God expressed through His Creation. And when you’ve eventually learned all there is to know about one thing, you can start all over again with something else that’s amazing and cool to learn. Wherever you go, God will be right there with you enjoying your joy and wonder.
I’m not saying that you certainly will go to another planet. I’m not saying you will have the ability to plumb every mystery or get the answer to any question you can think of. The Bible doesn’t say that. But in my limited comprehension, I don’t see why not.
But you have to get your “super-power” from God first. If you don’t, it’ll be game over for you.
